Alumna Receives NSF Research Fellowship

New Rochelle, N.Y (April 1, 2016) -- Iona alumna Michelle Muzzio has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship to pursue doctoral work in chemistry at Brown University. Muzzio graduated in 2015, majoring in chemistry and English, and was the class’s valedictorian.
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) is awarded to just 2,000 students each year from a pool of nearly 17,000 applicants. It will provide three years of financial support within a five-year fellowship period for her graduate study at Brown, during which Ms. Muzzio proposes to develop a nanoparticle based catalytic system to electrochemically reduce carbon dioxide into useful chemical products.
NSF proposal reviewers in particular praised her exceptional academic and research preparation at Iona College, with three peer-reviewed publications as an undergraduate during her research experience with Iona chemistry professor and department chair, Sunghee Lee, Ph.D., in addition to multiple academic presentations. Muzzio also was the recipient of a Patrick J. Martin Scholarship, which help support students in the sciences.
"I'm proud of the accomplished Iona students who are Pat Martin Scholars," said Patrick J. Martin, Ph.D. '62. "It speaks well of Iona and Michelle Muzzio that she has been recognized by such a prestigious graduate program in the sciences. I have a feeling that we have not heard the last of this extraordinary young women."
Sibdas Ghosh, Ph.D., dean of Iona’s School of Arts and Science, added: "Our students continue to move the world, at Iona and beyond. We thank Dr. Martin for making the Patrick J. Martin Scholarship program another tool to prepare students such as Michelle for the next steps in their lives and careers."
