Cross Country Continues Tradition of Excellence

IonaTHONThe cross country programs both captured MAAC titles this fall at Disney.
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Iona College men's and women's cross country teams continued its rich tradition of excellence in the fall of 2016 with each capturing a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and the men's program earning a 10th place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships in November.
The men won their 26th straight MAAC title at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Gaels earned a perfect score of 15 and had the top eight finishers in the 8k event. Kieran Clements '16 won the individual title for the Maroon & Gold. Later in the month, Iona earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship with a second place finish at Northeast Regionals at Van Cortlandt Park. The Gaels finished their cross country season by finishing 10th in the nation at NCAAs in Terre Haute, Ind. Iona has earned a top 10 finish in 13-of-the-last-14 national events, a feat accomplished by only one other program (Wisconsin).
Iona's women's program recaptured glory at the MAAC Championship, earning its 11th MAAC Championship in the last 12 years. Following a second place finish in 2015, the Gaels avenged the defeat by one of the closest margins in race history, just two points.
