NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona College recently began an international partnership with Universidad Panamericana, allowing communications students from the university in Guadalajara, Mexico, to earn degrees from both institutions in four years. Students attend Universidad Panamericana for three years and then Iona for the final one.
“The fact that this is a double degree really separates it from simply studying abroad,” said Jeff Turner
, Iona College director of International Affairs.
Qualifying students can earn full degrees from Universidad Panamericana in audiovisual communications, journalism or communications, advertising and public relations, along with the corresponding Mass Communication degree from Iona, majoring in broadcast media, journalism or public relations.
Iona’s proximity to New York City serves as major attraction, with the heart of the media capital of the world located just 20 miles south of campus.
“The experience is amazing,” said Ana Morera Balaguer
, a current student in the program from Barcelona, Spain. “The opportunity of knowing how college life (in the United States) works along with having New York City so close is something incredible. Plus, the fact of meeting people from all over the world makes you grow as a person.”
Students in the program can also qualify Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing participants to stay in the country for an additional year with a work visa.
This international partnership is the first for Iona College in North America. Iona also has degree partnerships with universities in Spain, France, Germany, Russia and Italy.
