Leonard Korir in the Rio Olympics' 10,000-meter final
Iona College cross country/track & field alumnus Leonard Korir '12 became Iona's first USATF Olympian when he competed at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 13. A two-time NCAA Div. 1 national champion while competing for Iona, Korir finished 14th overall in a 34 runners in the 10,000-meter final -- second of three Americans.

Former Gael Maya Rehberg ran for her native Germany, also in track & field -- placing 15th in her heat in the 3,000-meter steeple chase. She set the Iona 3k steeple chase standard at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

A third Gael, Anna Holm Baumeister represented Denmark in the women's marathon on August 14. She finished 55th out of a field of 157 competitors.
