Iona Celebrates 2017 Reunion Gala

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Seven Iona College alumni were honored with four different awards at the 2017 Reunion Gala at VIP Country Club in May. The annual event was part of this year's Reunion Weekend that took place in May.
In addition to the Gala, Iona hosted its alumni for a welcome toast, a heritage trail tour, a jubilarian mass & golden Gaels dinner, a breakfast with the College's Irish Christian brothers, a reunion barbeque, and a mass and lunch celebrating the members of the class of 1957.  Visit Iona Connection's Reunion Central for photos from the entire weekend.
The following honors were awarded at the gala:
The Brother William B. Cornelia Founders Award for Outstanding Service to the College, named for the founding president of Iona, was inaugurated in 1961. Bestowal of this award is intended to show the Association’s appreciation for those who have generously given of their time, resources and energies for the betterment of the College.

Charles W. Schoenherr ’82
The Brother John G. Driscoll Award for Humanitarian Service recognizes members of the Iona Community who, by their activities and service to others, have reinforced Iona’s identity as a College founded in the tradition of the Congregation of Christian Brothers and American Catholic higher education. This award, established in 1995, is named in honor of Br. Driscoll, sixth president of the College, who by his example, imbued all with the spirit of scholarship, vision and humanitarian service.

The Brother Arthur A. Loftus Award for Outstanding Achievement recognizes and honors Ionians who have brought acclaim to the College by brilliant accomplishments in their chosen careers.  This award, dating back to 1965, perpetuates the memory of Iona’s second President, Br. Loftus, who was also on the original faculty of the College

The Brother Robert A. Durning Rising Star Award, in its inaugural year, is named for Iona’s beloved alumni and faculty member, Brother Robert A. Durning ’69. It honors recent Iona graduates who have already brought acclaim to the College through achievements in their respective fields. Brother Durning was a dynamic and gifted teacher who touched the lives of many students. With this award, we honor his commitment to excellence and the pursuit of lifelong learning by recognizing these outstanding young professionals.

Charles W. Schoenherr ABOUT THE HONOREE: Charles W. Schoenherr ’82
Charles W. Schoenherr serves as managing director of Waypoint Residential, which acquires, develops, renovates, and manages multifamily apartment communities in the Sun Belt. He has been employed in this capacity since January 2011, and is responsible for raising debt and equity for such transactions. Over the past six years, Waypoint has acquired or developed over 15,000 units valued at over $1.8 billion.
From June 2009 until December 2010, Charles was president of Scout Real Estate Capital, LLC, a full-service real estate firm that focuses on acquiring, developing and operating hospitality assets.
From September 1997 through October 2008, Charles was a managing director of Lehman Brothers' Global Real Estate Group. While at Lehman, he was responsible for originating debt, mezzanine and equity transactions on all major property types throughout the United States. During his Lehman career, he was consistently ranked as a top producer and originated over $10 billion of debt and equity across more than 100 transactions throughout the country. Two of his signature transactions involved buying and financing Rockefeller Plaza and the General Motors building, both in NYC. During his career, Charles has also held senior management positions with GE Capital Corporation, GE Investments, Inc., and KPMG LLP, where he also practiced as a certified public accountant.
Charles currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Iona College. He also serves on the board of Colony/NorthStar, which is a market-leading international real estate company. Charles holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Iona College and Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Connecticut in Stamford, Conn.

Maria Perdoncin Barton ABOUT THE HONOREE: Maria Perdoncin Barton ’87
Maria Perdoncin Barton grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y., and graduated from The Ursuline School in 1983. She received her BBA in Marketing from Iona College in 1987, and then earned an MBA in Marketing in 1993 from Fordham University.
Maria enjoyed an extensive career at Nestle Waters, North America, in various marketing leadership positions. She managed domestic and global bottled water brands, and several channels of retail distribution. In 2000, Maria was given the President’s Award for exemplary business results, and for her service leading the company’s Mentor Program with Connecticut public schools. Prior to working at Nestle Waters, Maria consulted on-site at Pepsi-Cola Co. Maria is proud to trace her start in the consumer-packaged goods industry back to Iona College’s valuable internship program, when she worked for Sound Distributing.
In 2013, Maria co-founded the Rex Griswold Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, for which she continues to volunteer and serves as executive director. The foundation’s mission is to raise awareness and funds for multiple system atrophy (MSA). MSA is a rare, fatal, neurodegenerative disease with aggressive Parkinson’s-like symptoms and very limited options to slow its progression. She was inspired by her friend and former colleague, Rex Griswold, who is currently battling MSA. Through the Rex Griswold Foundation, he is sharing his story and courageous fight to bring this devastating disease to the forefront of medical research, and work toward a cure.
Maria recently joined The Ursuline School in the newly created role of Global Education & Serviam Coordinator. Maria is proud to be working in Catholic education, combining her passion for service and social justice, with her strategic planning experience and love of international travel. Her work will contribute to Ursuline’s mission of “educating, inspiring and empowering” future women leaders, as they grow in the school’s Christian tradition of “serviam” (I will serve).
Maria currently resides in Harrison, N.Y., with her husband, Michael Barton ’84, ’87MS, and their two daughters, Lauren and Kiera. She served on the Iona College Alumni Board of Directors from 1988-2004. Maria is a eucharistic minister, trustee and member of the Parish Council at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, N.Y. She also enjoys volunteering at her children’s school, Resurrection, having served as co-chairperson of several committees, including its “Make a Difference” service program.

Colonel Stephen M. Bahr, USA Ret. ABOUT THE HONOREE: Colonel Stephen M. Bahr, USA Ret., ’72
Stephen M. Bahr graduated from Iona in 1972 with a BA in Mathematics. He enrolled in ROTC at Fordham University, as an Iona freshman, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, in July 1972, after completing Summer Camp Training at Indian Town Gap Military Reservation, in PA. Steve later completed an MS in Computer Science at Bowie State College in 1987; The Army War College in 1994; Defense Acquisition University, Defense Systems Management College in 1996; and The Program for Senior Executive Fellows at Harvard University in 2001.
During his 30-year career in the military, he and his family experienced 15 moves throughout the United States; Seoul, South Korea; and Brussels, Belgium. Twenty-six of those years were in computer science and operations research assignments. Highlights include over eight years in multiple assignments to the Pentagon; four years as chief of systems development and maintenance, Situation Centre, NATO Headquarters, Brussels; and, two years as director of systems support, National Security Council, The White House. He commanded the Army’s largest software development and engineering center in Fort Lee; and, in his last assignment, he served three years as the assistant program executive officer for command, control and communications systems, and – dual hatted – as the director of the central technical support facility in Fort Hood. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing the integration of 10 of the Army’s global, disparate command, control and intelligence systems into a system-of-systems – called the Army Battle Command System (ABCS) – and then fielding that to the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) in what is referred to as the “digitization of the Army” or “Army transformation” because, as a result of these newfound capabilities, the Army literally changed the way it fights. The Army Chief of Staff was so impressed with what was accomplished in the creation of ABCS, that he declared the Central Technical Support Facility to be an “Army Center of Excellence” – a very rare honor. ABCS enabled the creation of the Stryker Brigades and gave birth to the term “network-centric warfare/operations (NCO/W)”.
After retirement from the Army, Steve went to work for IBM as a senior managing consultant, primarily assigned to the newly formed, global “Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium” – a consortium that grew to nearly 100 members, international corporations, that had come together to solve the problems associated with NCO/W. There, over the course of nearly eight years, he was elected to several, senior technical leadership positions, guiding the research of the computer scientists, communication technicians and mathematicians, working for Consortium – their time donated by the member corporations. In 2003, Steve had the honor of being the guest speaker at a dinner for the Norwegian Deputy Minister of Defense and his senior Admirals in Oslo, Norway. The subject of his talk was “Network-Centric Warfare – On Describing the Vision.” He was also the featured speaker for the Consortium at the NATO Network Enabled Capability Conference in Rome, Italy, in 2010, presenting to NATO’s generals and admirals a live demonstration on “lab interoperability” – connecting the labs of five Consortium member corporations, scattered throughout the globe, all participating in a mock exercise.
Following IBM, Steve decided to return to the federal sector where he currently serves as the chief of the cybersecurity branch, Division of Information Technology, Wage and Hour Division, U.S. Department of Labor.
Steve married Joayn P. Toterhi during Christmas break of his junior year, on December 27, 1970. They have two children, Tara Ayn (married to Benjamin Brandt) and Stephen Michael II (married to Crystal Keeley), and three grandchildren, Jackson and Alexander Brandt, and Connor Bahr. Steve and Joayn reside in Clifton, Va.

Terence W. Edwards ABOUT THE HONOREE: Terence W. Edwards ’77
Terence W. Edwards, now retired, was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fannie Mae from September 2013 to April 2015, responsible for oversight of various strategic initiatives ($600 million budget) and for work relating to the common securitization platform. Terry was also responsible for Fannie Mae’s credit portfolio management organization and for overseeing Fannie Mae’s work in developing and integrating to a common securitization platform. He was also appointed the first chairman of the board for Common Securitization Services, a joint effort among Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHFA.
Terry served as Fannie Mae’s executive vice president of credit portfolio management from September 2009, when he joined Fannie Mae, to September 2013. In this role, his team changed the way investors communicate with delinquent borrowers. This customer care approach kept more families in their homes thereby reducing credit losses for taxpayers. The method has been adopted by all banks and mortgage companies in the United States who service mortgages.
Before joining Fannie Mae, Terry served as the president and chief executive officer of PHH Corporation, a leading outsource provider of mortgage and fleet management services, from January 2005 to June 2009. Terry had previously served in other executive roles at PHH Corporation.
From 1977 to 1980 he worked for Perdue Farms Inc.
Terry has a BA in Finance and Management from Iona and a Master of Finance from Loyola University in Baltimore.

Raymond F. Kerins Jr. ABOUT THE HONOREE: Raymond F. Kerins Jr. ’92, ’94MS
Ray Kerins is senior vice president and head of communications, government relations & policy for Bayer U.S. LLC.
Ray manages all communications, government relations and policy for Bayer and the company's main businesses – agricultural, consumer, pharmaceuticals and animal health. Ray is a member of the U.S. Country Leadership Team and the Bayer Global Leadership Council.
Ray oversees the Bayer U.S. Foundation and is chairman of Bayer’s political action committee (BAYPAC). He is the executive sponsor for two Bayer employee resource groups: BRAVE (Bayer Resource for Armed Forces Veteran Employees) and BLEND (Bayer’s LGBT organization) and is the site manager for all of Bayer’s buildings in the Northeast, covering 4,000 employees.
Previously, Ray was vice president of External Affairs & Worldwide Communications for Pfizer Inc. Prior to Pfizer, he was executive director of Public Affairs for Merck & Co. and served as the company’s chief global spokesperson following the Vioxx recall.
Ray is the two-time recipient of the PRWeek magazine “Public Relations Professional of the Year” (2010 & 2016) and was recently inducted in the PR News Hall of Fame (2015). In 2016, Medical Marketing & Media Magazine anointed Ray as a “2016 Top 50 Most Influential People in Healthcare in the U.S.”
He is a member of the board of directors at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, as well as a board member of the Chamber’s Global Intellectual Property Center. Ray serves on the Center for Disease Control & Prevention’s Business Roundtable on Global Health Threats. He is a long-standing member of the annual National Press Foundation Awards Dinner Committee.
While at Iona, Ray was a four-year member of the award-winning Rugby team, but was also a cheerleader for the basketball team. He was an academic senator in the Student Government Association and was a student minister in Campus Ministries. He is a member of the Sigma Delta Phi fraternity. Following graduation, Ray was a resident assistant in the Campus Ministries house, coached the women’s rugby team and worked in the Office of Admissions at Iona.
Ray holds a Master of Science degree and Bachelor of Arts degree from Iona College. He has also attended executive leadership trainings at Harvard Business School.
Ray enjoys coaching his three children in their sports of choice, namely soccer and basketball. He is currently the head coach of the U14 boys and U12 girls American Youth Soccer Organization Region 95, as well as for the boys’ basketball team for the Somers (N.Y.) Youth Sports Organization.
Ray has been married 21 years to his beautiful wife, Brenda, who he met at Iona.

James R. Nanton ABOUT THE HONOREE: James R. Nanton ’72
James R. Nanton is a corporate officer and adviser at UST Global, a technology services company based in Southern California. He joined UST Global following his retirement from Hanesbrands after a lengthy career in information technology that began shortly after his graduation from Iona.
At Hanesbrands, Jim was senior vice president and chief information officer with global responsibility for the firm’s information technology. Prior to Hanesbrands, he was CIO of Sara Lee Branded Apparel in North Carolina. He began his IT career as a programmer at National Bank of Westchester in New Rochelle (later acquired by Chase). He has also worked in the manufacturing and financial services sectors. He was a senior IT executive at Citigroup in New York.
Jim has been active in his community of Winston-Salem, N.C., where he lived for 24 years. He has served on and led many non-profit and foundation boards. He chaired the boards of the United Way of Forsyth County, The Salvation Army Area Command, and the Simon Green-Atkins Community Development Corporation. He has also led the local chapter of Sigma Pi Phi, an African-American fraternity for professionals.
Deeply committed to education, Jim taught a capstone IT course as an adjunct professor at Winston-Salem State University, part of the University of North Carolina system. He also served as a member of the university’s board of trustees. He is currently chairman of the school’s International Programs Advisory Board and a member of the Computer Science Advisory Board.
Jim has also been involved with Forsyth Tech Community College where he served for multiple terms on the college’s foundation board. At UST Global, he has helped to promote Step IT Up America, the firm’s nationally recognized training program designed to create jobs for minority women and veterans in the IT industry.
Jim graduated summa cum laude from Iona. He also has an MS in Management of Technology from NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. He has been named by Black Engineering Magazine to their list of “50 Most Important African- Americans in Technology.” Jim has often been a featured speaker at technology conferences in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
Jim and his wife Claire live in Lewisville, N.C. Their daughter, Jaleema, is a physician. She and her family live nearby.

Robert P. Baldino. ABOUT THE HONOREE: Robert P. Baldino ’12
Robert P. Baldino is a co-founder of Balitello Socks and senior consultant at Capco, a global business and technology consultancy that specializes in the financial services industry. Additionally, Robert has served as a board member for High Hawk Partners, an organization that assists startups to receive proper funding and guidance in strategic growth.
While at Capco, he has focused on developing business requirements, facilitating workshops for top stakeholders, and generating process and work flows to aid top tier financial institution implementations. His professional hands-on strategy and operations experiences have provided the opportunity to lead teams, perform intensive research, and cultivate relationships while producing results and strong deliverables for clients around the globe. Prior to joining Capco, Rob spent his management consulting career at Second Flight Consultancy where he provided project management, strategy formulation and operating model transformation to clients that include BMW, Amazon, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, and Lincoln Financial Group.
Robert’s entrepreneurial journey has been one of industry-rippling transformation.
