NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Over the recent semester break, 59 Iona College students, staff, faculty, and alumni participated in five Iona in Mission immersion trips in India, Ireland, Peru, Bridgeport (Conn.), and Philadelphia.
Below is a description of the activities which Iona In Mission participated in early January.
India (January 2-13, 2018)
Once again, Iona College partnered with the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in Kolkata, India. Iona helped serve various Brothers’ ministries with children and people with disabilities while also collaborating with the Nine is Mine Campaign in running human rights workshops and advocacy campaigns with the students of the Christian Brother schools.
The group also served with the Missionaries of Charity at the Mother Teresa houses serving the extremely poor, sick and dying. The India trip was also a service-learning course through Iona's Religious Studies Department.
Ireland (January 2-13, 2018)
Students walked in the footsteps of Blessed Edmund Rice during this mission immersion in Ireland. The group spent a week in Dublin, serving at the Wheatfield Prison, the Peter McVerry drop-in center for people who are homeless or suffering addiction, and soup kitchens while learning about social justice issues relating to these populations.
The team also headed to Waterford and Callan to visit the Blessed Edmund Rice heritage sites, and to Belfast to serve with the Edmund Rice Network ministries at the Westcourt Centre. Like the India trip, the Ireland visit was a service-learning course through Iona's Religious Studies Department.
Peru (January 2-13, 2018)
The Iona in Mission group partnered with the North American Christian Brothers Immersion Program in the Canto Grande and Jicamarca barrios of Lima, Peru, to build relationships of solidarity through home construction, family visits and running a day camp for the children of the neighborhood. Iona is one of 19 Christian Brother schools across North America to send an immersion group to Lima
Bridgeport, Conn. (January 8-13, 2018)
The team partnered with the Habitat for Humanity Chapter of Coastal Fairfield County for a week of service on their home construction and repair builds for families and veterans in Bridgeport, CT. During the week there were opportunities to explore local sites and a community night with volunteers and homeowners from the Habitat chapter. The students helped make the right to shelter and affordable housing a reality in a local community.
Philadelphia, Pa. (January 8-14, 2018)
Iona’s team served at the Saint Francis Inn, a place of ministry with people who are homeless, addicted, mentally ill and very poor in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The main service site was a restaurant-style soup kitchen that fed up to 400 people a day while also providing other services. Additionally, the group participated in service projects with the elderly and terminally ill at the Sacred Heart nursing home.
