Beginning April 21, Iona College will celebrate the inauguration of Seamus Carey, Ph.D., as our ninth president. Members from all parts of the Iona community - students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends - are invited to join together for various events to welcome President Carey to the Iona family.

Tuesday, April 21

  • Iona Scholars Day All Day Event | All Campus Event
    Iona Scholars Day (ISD) is an annual event which celebrates the scholarship and creative activities performed by Iona students. The day showcases faculty-mentored student work and allows students in all disciplines to recognize and appreciate each other's work through oral presentations, panel sessions, performances, and poster presentations.
  • Oral/Panel Presentations 9 a.m.-Noon | McGrath A&B, LaPenta Student Union
    Presentation Topics: Health, Wellness, and the Environment (9 a.m.); Creativity, Knowledge, and Entrepreneurship Across Disciplines (10 a.m.); Breaking Down Systems of Inequality (11 a.m.)
  • Poster Presentations and Lunch Noon-2 p.m. | Mulcahy Gymnasium
    One of the highlights of Iona Scholars Day, this event is an opportunity to discover the deep research Iona students have been engaged in throughout the year.
  • Oral/Panel Presentations 1-4 p.m. | McGrath A&B, LaPenta Student Union
    Presentation Topics: Technology, Social Media, and Society (1 p.m.); Leadership and Ethical Decision-Making (2 p.m.); Goodness, Beauty, and Virtue (3 p.m.)
  • Fine Arts Scholarship on Music, Dance, and Visual Arts 2-3:30 p.m. | Hegarty Room, Hynes Athletics Center
    Explore the creative side of Iona as students share their unique experiences and perspectives through music, dance and the visual arts.
  • Keynote, Award Ceremony and Reception 4-5:30 p.m. | Mulcahy Gym, Hynes Athletics Center
    Keynote speaker Dr. Margaret Pisani ’85 will discuss the importance of research, her path from Iona to Yale, and the intersection of her research with her role as mentor. Afterward, selected Iona Scholars Day participants will be presented with awards for work that is well-organized, engaging and clear in its vision and planning.
  • Career Decision Points: Science, Stories and Approaches Related to Career Decision Making 6:30-8 p.m. | End Zone, LaPenta Student Union
    Learn from a panel of professionals on how they seized upon opportunities as well as moments and decisions that altered their career trajectory. The Center for Career Development will provide an overview of the science behind career decision making.

Wednesday, April 22

  • Earth Day
    Join in a celebration of Earth Day as Iona College continues its dedication to the responsible stewardship of human, physical, financial and environmental resources. More details forthcoming.
  • Faculty and Student Panel | Iona Past and Future: From an Island to the World
    Faculty and students will lead a discussion on Iona College’s place in the world as an educational and service-oriented institution. All are welcome to attend.

Thursday, April 23

  • Gaels Give Back: A Celebration of Spirit And Service Noon-2 p.m. | Burke Lounge and Portico, Spellman Hall
    This festive event will highlight performances of Iona’s various Spirit groups (Pipers, Cheerleaders, Dance Team, and more) while also celebrating the college’s commitment to service and community engagement.
    • Book Drive
      To support the various after-school centers where Iona College students volunteer and promote literacy there will be a book drive to collect new story books for grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
      Register to donate new childrens books (K-8) here.
      Upon registration, Campus Minister Alycia Fitzgerald will confirm your registration and inform you of collection sites.
    • Veterans Baskets
      In the tradition of the College’s longstanding commitment to veterans, there will be a collection of "starter baskets" to be distributed at Veterans Hospitals serving formerly homeless veterans who are establishing their own apartments. The baskets will include towels, soaps, and needed kitchen supplies.

      Upon registration, Campus Minister Escarlin Perez will send you a complete list of requested items and information about the collection of these items.

  • Inauguration Mass 10 a.m. | Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, Arrigoni Center
    Join the Iona community for the Presidential Inauguration Mass on Friday, April 24 at 10 a.m. at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel in Arrigoni Center.
  • Vesting (Robing) and Procession Gathering 11 a.m. | Hegarty Room, Hynes Athletics Center
  • Procession 11:45 a.m.
  • The Investiture of Seamus Carey, Ph.D., as ninth president of Iona College Noon | Hynes Athletics Center

  • Reception 1:30 p.m. | Mulcahy Gym, Hynes Athletics Center
