My Iona

Enrolling in Courses

Once you have deposited for the semester and have set up your Iona online access, you may arrange an appointment with any Academic Advisor available in the Center for Advising and Academic Services. Together, you will discuss degree requirements and you will create your schedule of classes for the fall term.

You must have your schedule in place before your scheduled June Orientation program.

Creating Your First Class Schedule

With the aid of an advisor, you are going to enroll in five or six courses total, though you can select as few as four courses, for a total of 12 to 18 credits.

  • Courses 1 & 2: COL 150 (Columba Cornerstone) and its paired subject course. Course pairs are noted below in the Selecting a COL 150 & Paired Subject. The same students who enroll in Columba will also be enrolled in the same paired subject.
  • Courses 3, 4 & 5: Courses related to a planned major or exploration of interests and from the University Core requirements

The first two courses you choose must be a COL 150 course (Columba Cornerstone) and its paired subject. These two courses must be in your official schedule, before selecting your remaining courses.

All students in their first term take courses that are related to a planned major or exploration of interests and from the university core requirements.  However, some majors to make more specific recommendations for the first term and year, found here.

For majors in the sciences, math, and computer science, placement in math and science will be reviewed by an academic advisor with your high school background and grades in mind. Most of these majors require college calculus, and some require multiple levels of calculus and upper-level math.

All Iona University students must take one semester of a language other than English (3-credit course) as part of the 9 credit-Diversity Cross-Cultural and Global Perspectives University Core requirement.  (A second course in the same language, though not required of all students, counts for three more credits toward the 9 credit DCCG requirement).  An online placement system has been developed by the University's Languages faculty to ensure that your language study at Iona is well suited to your background in a particular language.

Language Placement Survey

You are asked to complete a brief survey about your experience with one or more language other than English. If you wish to study Spanish or Italian, you may be required to take a placement test.

If you have no prior experience with Spanish or Italian, you do not need to take a placement survey.

If you have studied Spanish or Italian and/or if you are a heritage speaker of either language, you need to complete the placement text on the language you intend to study at Iona. The language placement test takes only 15 to 20 minutes. Please review the Major Recommendations page for guidance about courses.
