Placement for English, Math and Science

English

English placement is tied to how well a student is prepared for College level writing and research. Student must take English composition in the first year, ideally in their first semester, unless an equivalent course is being brought in by course or by exam.
Select your English course based upon the following criteria:*

SAT Reading & Writing score H.S. English Average Iona Course Placement Iona Course title
Less than 500 Less than 80 ENG 110 (by permission) Introduction to Critical Writing
500 to 599 80 to 89 ENG 120 Communication Skills: Writing I
600 or More 90 or More ENG 122 Communication Skills: Advanced Composition

Math

Math placement is tied to planned majors, at least 3 years of HS Math, and whether or not a student studied any form of calculus in high school. Students who have struggled with math, or have not taken pre-calculus, may need a transitional math on the way to the Math course required for the Core or for a future major. Students who have studied calculus in some form will have several math options depending upon the planned major. Students who enroll in courses they do not meet the criteria for will be removed from the course.
Select your Math course based upon the following criteria, after considering your possible major:*

Majors in any Business Degree must eventually complete MTH 134 – Business Calculus or MTH 231 - Calculus
SAT Math H.S. Math Average and Course Content Iona Course Placement Iona Course title
Less than 500 Less than 80/No Pre- Calc MTH 115 (by permission) Fundamentals of Algebra
500 - 540 80 or higher/ No Pre-Calc Consult with the Advising Center for Placement*
Greater than 540 85 or higher/Pre-Calculus MTH 134 or
MTH 231
Business Calculus
Calculus I

*Students in this range have 3 placement options 1) MTH 115 2) CDS 1196, Pre-Calculus Math Modules, with MTH 134, and 3) MTH134.
Students may consult with the Advising Center about where they are best placed for academic success.

Science

(Only for those pursuing majors in the Sciences, Computer Science, or Math)

Science placement is tied to planned majors, at least 3 years of HS lab based science in Biology/Chemistry or Physics. Students should understand that these majors are supported by strong math skills, where Calculus is required. Students who enroll in courses they do not meet the criteria for will be removed from the course.

Select your Science course based upon the following criteria, after considering your possible major:*
