Student Activities & Competitions NYSSA/CFA Institute Research Challenge (2014-15). Four MBA/undergraduate business students make up the Iona team in the 2014 Annual CFA Institute Research Challenge, an educational initiative in which leading industry professionals teach business and finance students how to research and report on a publicly-traded company. The Research Challenge is sponsored by CFA Institute and locally hosted by the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA). NYSSA originated the competition 11 years ago (as the Investment Research Challenge) as a means to promote best practices in research among the next generation of analysts. Iona’s team used the CFMS resources extensively to perform its research and analysis. College Fed Challenge (2014). The College Fed Challenge is a team competition for undergraduate college students inspired by the working of the Federal Open Market Committee. It is intended to encourage students to learn more about the U.S. macro economy, the Federal Reserve System and the implementation of monetary policy and financial stability. It is also aimed at spurring interest in economics and finance as subjects for advanced study and as the basis for a career. The Iona Fed Challenge team competed in October 2014 and used the CFMS to gain easy access to the economic data necessary to perform the analysis required to succeed in the Fed Challenge. CME Group Trading Challenge (2015). The CME Group Trading Challenge is a complimentary four-week electronic trading competition where teams of undergraduate and graduate students can trade a variety of CME Group products from multiple asset classes in a simulated trading environment on a real-time professional trading platform. Iona forms several teams of students to participate in this growing competition. The teams will meet daily on the Trading Floor and make extensive use of commodity spot and futures price data available in the room. Global Asset Management in Education Forum (2015). The Seminar in Finance class conducts half of its sessions in the CFMS and uses the Center’s resources to learn about how to use available tools to invest its real-money portfolio. As a capstone, CFMS sponsors several of the students to accompany the Director at the Global Asset Management in Education (GAME) forum in Manhattan. The conference brings an international group of current and future leaders from the financial services industry together to explore important developments, challenges and opportunities facing investment professionals within the global financial markets. The forum attracts over 1,000 student participants from 44 states and 33 countries, representing 118 universities to hear 120 speakers over two and a half days. Student Club Activities. The Iona Finance Club has conducted regular meetings in the CFMS Trading Floor. These meetings have also included an orientation to CFMS resources and advanced “drill-down” techniques to make full use of the data available in the Center. Gael Fund. Planning is underway on the future launch of a student-run real-money investment fund overseen by the CFMS. The fund will have the goal of educating students about how the capital markets operate, while providing real-world experience with investment management.
