Center for Sports, Entertainment, and Media Business

Iona College has established itself as a leading institutional voice in sports and entertainment business by creating a Center that builds on the  School of Business experience. The Center focuses on the best practices of the media, marketing and management of this industry as well as provide undergraduate and graduate students with "insider" knowledge of career advancement strategies.

About the Center

The business of sports, entertainment and media continues to evolve at break-neck speed due to disruptive technology and the daily emergence of both content-producing and distributing media companies. The long-ago era of three networks, rotary phones, newspapers and terrestrial radio as the primary media source has given way to personalized media consumption experiences via satellite and digital/mobile technology. From “breaking news” to “all-access” coverage of teams, games and events to 24/7 social media conversation, sports, entertainment, and news offer marketers an efficient vehicle to reach consumers and business-to-business executives.

Arguably, the greater metropolitan New York City area is the sports, entertainment, and media industry capital of the world. Through LinkedIn research this past summer, Iona’s Center for Sports, Entertainment, and Media Business identified more than 200 companies and 100,000 employees that are engaged in this multi-billion dollar industry – agencies (advertising and marketing), media (multi-platform) companies, and properties (leagues, teams and events) are the dominant players.

As in real estate, location is everything. Iona College’s campus is an easy commute to these companies – a train ride to Manhattan or surrounding boroughs and suburbs, a short drive to Stamford, Conn., or Hauppauge, Long Island, or Secaucus, N.J.

Career advancement starts with education – a college degree and industry insights – that is realized through careful planning, a feel for marketplace dynamics, experience through internships, networking, and a commitment to compete in an ultra-competitive environment that is NYC or the global stage.

Iona College has the location, resources and focus to develop and/or advance your sports, entertainment, or media career aspirations.
