What did Iona College’s SEM Business program and/or faculty mean to you?
The Sports, Entertainment, and Media Business program played an influential role in jumpstarting my career into the sports industry. The SEMB program not only supplied me with the necessary information to break into and strive in the industry, but it also supplied and connected me with the appropriate industry leaders and resources to gain traction in the industry.
What was the most beneficial aspect of the program that potential students should know about?
The SEMB Dinner Series is an extremely beneficial aspect of the program, and I encourage students to not only attend the dinners, but be engaged, ask questions, and follow up with the industry contacts that are in their hands. The dinner series are not just a Q&A/panel discussions, but a face-to-face networking event in itself.
How did the program help your career?
The SEMB program and its dinner series have directly helped in my career. I have been introduced to various industry leaders that I have gained internships, job offers, and invaluable experience from.
What was the most memorable experience in being part of the program?
The most memorable experience I took away from the SEMB program was meeting, and having the honor to help introduce Ross Greenburg into the Iona family. Late into my senior year, I was encouraged to attend the introduction to Ross Greenburg and experience some of his most renowned works such as his 2004 film Miracle and Hard Knocks. Meeting and speaking with Ross was a treat that I could have only experienced through the SEMB program.
What are you doing now?
Through Iona’s Sports, Entertainment, and Media Dinner Series, I was connected with one industry leader whom I continued conversation with after our initial meeting. This eventually lead to an internship opportunity with Ascendent Sports Group, a dynamic, full-service marketing agency with a focus on innovative sponsorship sales, consulting, and event management created by Miami Dolphin’s owner Stephen Ross. There I gained valuable experience working with major corporate sponsors of the International Champions Cup, the Miami Dolphins, and the Atlantic Coast Conference, as well as managing event activations for the Ironman Triathlon across the U.S. in California, Colorado, Idaho and Wisconsin.
Upon completion of my 10-week internship, I was connected with a pair of industry leaders, again through Iona’s SEM program, who offered me a consulting position with their advisory firm, Accelerated Growth Partners. Currently, we help major properties and brands such as the World Surf League, USA Today, and Hotels.com find the right fit to strategically market themselves through sports, media, and entertainment outlets with a focus on revenue development and acceleration.
