Dr. Tommy Van Cleave joined Iona College in 2013 as the founding director for the Office of Service and Experiential Learning, responsible for all academic service-based pedagogies at the College. In 2015, Dr. Van Cleave was named interim co-director for Study Abroad. In 2016, the pedagogies of service-learning and study abroad were combined into a centralized office, where Dr. Van Cleave is currently the founding director for the Office of Academic Civic and Global Engagement.
Dr. Van Cleave is an internationally recognized scholar with his research focusing on pedagogical strategies combining international experiences and community engaged pedagogies. His 2013 dissertation "Short-Term International Service-Learning: Faculty Perceptions of and Pedagogical Strategies for the Design and Implementation of Successful Learning Experiences" was awarded an Honorable Mention for Dissertation of the Year by the International Association for the Research of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement. In addition, he is a contributor to Stylus Publishing's "Learning Through Serving" (2nd Edition), Democratic Dilemmas of Teaching Service Learning, Routledge's "Academic and Student Affairs in Collaboration" (with Iona's Dr. Carl Procario-Foley) and Cambridge University Press' upcoming text "The Cambridge Handbook of Service Learning and Community Engagement."
Dr. Van Cleave holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership, a master's in Postsecondary, Adult & Continuing Education and two graduate certificates from Portland State University in Portland, Ore., and a bachelor's in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Mich.
