Postdoctoral Scholar, 2015-16, Providence College, R.I.

Dr. Draeger received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Brown University in Providence and work with Prof. Basu on a new method to synthesize oligosaccharides. Additionally, he performed postdoctoral research with Prof. Mulcahy at Providence College on transition metal catalyzed ring closing reactions.

His research interests can be broadly defined as reaction development and synthesis of organic compounds. More specifically, Dr. Draeger is interested in the analysis, synthesis or modification of cyclic molecules, with a strong focus on pharmacological active pyridine compounds and plant based oligosaccharides. Following the theme of ring containing molecules, his current research revolves around the synthesis of pyridines using a novel [2+2+2] cycloaddition between two alkynes and a nitrile, activated via transition metals. However, as sugars are notoriously hard to break up with (be that in research or nutrition) a return to carbohydrates is already in the making.
