CS Department Hosts Annual Alumni Gathering

The Computer Science Department organized its traditional gathering of alumni, students, faculty, and guests on April 22, 2016, in Arrigoni Center. Smiljana Petrovic, Ph.D., welcomed the attendees with a brief overview of important news since last year’s alumni event. She gave a special tribute to Professor Halaris who is celebrating 50 years at Iona College.
Valedictorian Sean Campbell ’16 reflected on his four years at Iona and advised students to get involved with research as soon as possible (see recording of Sean's reflection). Alumnus Steven Dominguez addressed attendees from the perspective of someone with a variety of interests and experiences, and advised students to “pay attention” to the wealth of opportunities around them. Lubomir Ivanov, Ph.D., and Paolina Centonze, Ph.D., gave inspirational presentations about the new Game Development and Cyber Security concentrations, and invited alumni to participate even more in the life of the Computer Science Department. Current students displayed posters describing their projects and research.
Entertainment throughout the evening was enjoyable. Alumnus Willmor Peña (guitar) and his brother Sebastian Peña (quena) performed several selections of Peruvian Music. Everyone was excited to hear another performance by Dr. Ivanov of classical rock hits (see recording of Dr. Ivanov's performance).
Sixty attendees enjoyed the dinner, program and friendly atmosphere. A group of current students and alumni stayed for a casual discussion long after others left, and some great initiatives came out of that spontaneous part of the evening.
We all look forward to continuing with this great tradition!
