Dr. Leipold Brings Science Education Coursework Off Campus

Malissa Leipold, Ed.D., has been active in incorporating the local community into her science education course curriculum.

The Associate Professor invited students from her EDU 384 and 862 courses to a “Mad Science Experience” children’s party presentation at her home in January, where students of all ages learned about basic scientific concepts through dynamic, hands-on experiments.

A scientist hands a young boy a beeker of orange liquid that is slowly vaporizing.

She subsequently brought her classes to The Body Blueprint fitness center in Pelham, where they learned about childhood nutrition and basic exercises they could lead in a classroom atmosphere. Students sit on the floor and stretch their legs while the fitness instructor gives direction. She concluded the semester with a visit to the Pelham Fire Department for a lesson on fire prevention safety.

The class poses at the firehouse with someone dressed in full fire fighter gear in the middle. There are also a few children posing too.

Each experience has been a great hit!
