Iona College Dance Ensemble, Fall 2018: "Kinetic Maze"

Kinetic Maze I: “Hidden Senses”

Performers: Dominique Bryden, Jenna Caccavale, Olivia Conte, Eileen Exama, Alexa Fiorillo, Matthew George, Simone Guidry, Khris-Annecia Lewis, Dan Liang, Danielle Plarinas, Christian Vega, Ashley Vera

Four dancers on a stage, two facing east the others facing west. Two Dancers bend down and one lifts her arms as if taking flight. This dance, co-created with the performers, is inspired by the quote by Alain Berthoz, "To the five traditional senses- touch, sight, hearing, taste, smell-we must add the sense of movement, or kinesthesia. Its characteristic feature is that it makes use of many receptors, but remarkably it has been forgotten in the count of the senses. By what twist did language suppress the sense most important to survival?”

Kinetic Maze II: Departure and Arrival

Choreography: Dr. Hannah Park in collaboration with the performers

Performers: Dominique Bryden, Jenna Caccavale, Olivia Conte, Eileen Exama, Alexa Fiorillo, Matthew George, Simone Guidry, Khris-Annecia Lewis, Dan Liang, Danielle Plarinas, Christian Vega, Ashley Vera

Seven dancers on the stage facing the audience except one is sprawled on the ground. The mood lighting is purple and the backdrop is of city buildings at sunset. A group of dancers gather on stage left raising their arms. A single dancer on stage left faces them and is about to move toward them. This dance investigates individuality within a group and emphasizes the exploration of bodily sensations within with special focus on awareness of entrances and exits and different pathways and relationships that it creates.
