Dr. Burns joined the Iona College faculty on a part-time basis in 1969, becoming full-time in 1971 upon receiving his doctorate in psychology. At that time Dr. Burns, was charged with opening the Pastoral and Family Therapy Center as a training facility for students in the program. Upon his election to the chair of the department in the spring of 1997, Dr. Burns led the program in a major reorganization as a Marriage and Family Therapy program. He also directed the department in its successful quest for national accreditation from Commission On Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), which was accomplished in 2004. Dr. Burns served as chair of the department from 1997 through 2009 and again from 2010 until his retirement in 2017. His teaching/training interests include structural and experiential therapies, self-of-the-therapists issues and supervising novice therapists.
Dr. Burns holds NYS licenses in Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy and maintains a clinical practice in New York serving individuals, couples and families. His clinical interests include working with families dealing with medical illnesses. He has also provided critical-incident debriefing with New York City police officers.
