Dr. Carpenter joined the Department of Mathematics as a full-time faculty member in 1981. He has received three degrees in mathematics, a B.S. from Benedictine University, an M. S. from Chicago State University, and an Ed. D. from the Columbia University. He teaches both in the undergraduate and graduate programs.

His research interests include the mathematics underlying and beyond the Common Core State Standards, the history of mathematics, and problem solving in the theory of numbers and in geometry. Prior to coming to Iona College, Dr. Carpenter taught at St. Mary of the Plains College. He has published in several refereed journals and has presented at regional, state and national conferences on topics in both mathematics and mathematics education.

Dr. Carpenter was a visiting Academic at Trinity College, Dublin Ireland.  He holds the Br. William H. Barnes Memorial Award for Service to Iona College.
