MA in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, 2015
I graduated from Iona College in 2015 with my master's degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology. In my second year at Iona, the I-O internship coordinator provided a list of possible organizations for a human resources based internship. I reached out to Yonkers City Hall, the municipality of my home town. After 10 months as an intern with the City of Yonkers, I was offered a position as a personnel assistant within the Human Resources Department.
It is extremely important for all students to partake in internships. Internships allow students to sample the work environment they plan to seek employment in post-graduation. An internship permits students to explore the career they have in mind and determine if it is, in fact, what they want to do in the future. I was extremely fortunate to get an internship that was nothing like what I expected to do with my Iona degree. I thought I would to work in the corporate world, but this internship opened my eyes and I realized that a career in the public sector is my calling.
I call to all Iona students – make sure you utilize the internship opportunities that Iona offers. The work site you step foot into may be the first step to the rest of your life.
