Regional Event

Two LPP students pose in front of the Iona College main gate.

In January 2018, Iona hosted groups from other Liberty Partnerships Programs (LPP) in our region. Students from Yonkers, Poughkeepsie, and Liberty, N.Y., came to Iona for a campus and residence hall tour, lunch, and to watch a basketball game against Rider College. It was a wonderful event and provided an outstanding opportunity for students to experience what life is like on a college campus.

In February 2018, Iona partnered with the Liberty Partnerships Program from SUNY Purchase, bringing Yonkers high school students to SUNY Sullivan for a “Hackathon.” The students spent the day learning how to code and create animated characters. The event culminated with a competition of best final projects. We were so proud when our own students took first place!

Advocacy Day

LPP students pose for Advocacy day holding signs that say Liberty Partnership

In February 2018, we participated in Advocacy Day in Albany, N.Y. Twelve students, along with LPP staff, traveled to Albany for the day. We had appointments to meet with several legislators, including Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, and Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. The students were in awe of the Capitol building, and were thrilled when we were invited into the Assembly chambers and introduced to the members! It was an incredibly impressive experience, which had quite an impact on the students. Several of our students are recent immigrants to the country and they were very moved by the experience.
