What did Iona College’s SEM Business program and/or faculty mean to you?
The SEMB program exposed me to the world of professional sports and entertainment. It allowed me to understand the depth of professional opportunities there are in the sports and entertainment industry by learning from industry veterans who were both adjunct professors and (many) guest speakers.
What was the most beneficial aspect of the program that potential students should know about?
The guest speakers and professors. Many of the professors are adjunct, still very much active in the SEMB industry with incredible connections to impressive guest speakers. My favorite classes were those when we had a speaker scheduled. With the small class sizes, it allowed the students to engage in a once in a lifetime, intimate, free-for-all conversation with an industry professional.
How did the program help your career?
Through the program I was able to accept an internship at the Barclays Center that served as a confidence catalyst to launch me into my current position with Turner Broadcasting. In addition to my internship, the exposure to industry professionals and their willingness to help me with my résumé/talking points/etc. aided me tremendously when it came time to interview. Lastly, Iona has a small networks of professors/alumni that work at Turner, which allowed for a bridge from which I could reach out for advice before interviewing at the company.
What was the most memorable experience in being part of the program?
When I think about the SEMB program, I immediately think of all of the panel dinners that I attended. In addition to the incredible guest speakers, one of my more memorable experiences was a group project to sell a sponsorship to Angry Orchard. I enjoyed this project, and class with Professor Sass, so much because it really opened my eyes to something that is interesting to me, and an area that I’d still like to work in to this day.
What are you doing now?
I’m currently working at Turner Broadcasting as a sales assistant (account service representative) in the Direct Response division. I steward a list of 30+ agencies that advertise on more than 7 networks (TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, TruTV, Boomerang, Adult Swim, NBA TV). I’m a direct assistant to the sales team; I book commercials, manage any/all discrepancies that the buyer may find with their schedules, and work with Commercial Traffic, Strategic Planning, Sales Operations, Standards & Practices and Corporate Credit teams to ensure that everything coming in from advertisers runs to their satisfaction.
I’m currently pitching for a marketing coordinator position with Turner Sports. This would be an upward, cross-divisional move, and a great next step for my career.
