Public History

The National Council on Public History (NCPH) defines the work of public, or applied, history as “the many and diverse ways in which history is put to work in the world. In this sense, it is history that is applied to real-world issues.” Inspired by this definition, and by the ongoing mission of Iona College of intellectual inquiry, community engagement, and an appreciation for diversity, the ITPS works in collaboration with partners around the Iona College and broader public history communities to empower students with exciting and engaging opportunities for experiential learning, both inside and outside the classroom. Public history also supports students in taking their knowledge of the historical past and applying it to a multitude of pre-professional skills, especially through networking and other engaging programming including the ITPS internship program, events, and digital media. Public history informs other initiatives at the ITPS, in particular our event and public programming, partnerships with other institutions, publications, and relevant projects to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
