Every day, Gabrielle Witt ’13 brings her passion for educating young minds into her fifth-grade classroom at Grace Academy – an all-girls, tuition-free middle school in Hartford, Conn. Her role at Grace Academy extends beyond teacher, having allowed her to serve as an adviser to grade classes, school librarian, sports coach, and the English Language Arts Mentor Teacher. Her desire to bring education to young minds saw her take on an opportunity to teach English abroad in Thailand, where she recently returned from.
“I would love to travel and teach abroad again, and perhaps expand my knowledge of educating students with special needs in other countries,” said Gaby.
Originally from Huntington, N.Y., Gaby attended Walt Whitman High School and knew that Iona College was the right place for her to continue her studies based on the reputation of its excellent teaching program. While at Iona, Gaby studied early childhood and elementary education, as well as Italian language and literature.
Gaby’s most rewarding experiences at Iona centered around the Office of Mission and Ministry, where she served as a student campus minister and assisted as the Iona in Mission liaison and the Success Center co-coordinator. She also sang and played guitar in the Arrigoni choir, as well as at Campus Ministry coffee house events, and was a participant in a variety of mission trips to Nazareth Farm in West Virginia as well Zambia, Africa. She believes her experience in the mission and service opportunities at Iona molded her into the person she is today.
“From going on Midnight Runs to (serving on) mission trips halfway across the world, I met all of my best friends through participating in-service experiences,” said Gaby. She encourages students to, “…get involved and find your voice. Iona is such a wonderful place to grow into the person you are meant to become. This is just the start of you moving the world!”
