Magalie Makhraz ’15

From Lebanon to Leadership

Coming from Lebanon, a 14-hour plane ride away, Magalie Makhraz ‘15 was looking for a college that would be a home away from home. She learned about Iona from its website, and then came to visit the College with her family.

Magalie chose Iona because of “its beautiful campus, its friendly students, and its amazing community.”

Enrolling at Iona as a marketing major, she immediately felt welcomed.

“The international community at Iona is strong,” she said. “No one stands alone. It’s very easy to make friends. Everyone is super-approachable. Everyone supports you. They welcome you in and motivate you to join the organizations and clubs on campus.”

Magalie’s leadership journey included being active in Iona’s Greek life. Participating in community service activities with her sorority and other sororities and fraternities, she met friends who motivated her to “be a better version of myself” and now considers these friends family.

When it was time to apply for internships, Magalie began to value Iona’s strong alumni connections, and how those connections can lead to internships and jobs.

An Iona graduate helped Magalie become a production and marketing intern at Tribune Broadcasting on “The Bill Cunningham Show” – and she learned that the person who helped her had also found a job through an Iona graduate.

As she finishes her degree at Iona, Magalie feels prepared to continue on to graduate studies – and to Move the World – from the coursework, leadership positions, internship and community service she undertook here.
