Living Learning Communities

First-year students may apply to enroll in one of the two Living Learning Communities (LLCs) at Iona College. LLCs are specialized living environments that unify the college experience inside and outside of the classroom. Each LLC is unique, but both are centered on a distinctive theme and/or academic interest area. Our two current LLCs are the Unity and Leadership LLC and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation LLC.

Benefits of Being a Part of the LLC:

  • Increase likelihood of thriving academically.
  • Development of meaningful relationships with the peers enrolled in your LLC.
  • Easier academic transition from high school to college-level courses with faculty members that work specifically with students enrolled in the LLC.
  • Continual interaction with faculty and staff both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Opportunity to spearhead events and/or programs with your resident assistant.

  • Unity and Leadership

A large group of students sit on the steps of Spellman.

This LLC is designed for incoming first-year students who wish to explore various dimensions of diversity so that they can be leaders in creating unity on campus and in their wider worlds. So much is happening in our local and global communities, and we believe that each individual has the ability to impact change in the lives of those around us through dialogue and service. The Unity and Leadership LLC is composed of a group of students that believe that change can be accomplished better by working together than it can by working apart.

    • Enroll in a one-credit course with only members of the LLC. This course will grant the opportunity to apply course materials to practical experiences outside of the classroom. Important: Students that are unavailable during this time will be ineligible for participation in the Unity and Leadership LLC.
    • Attend various social, cultural, intellectual, spiritual, and service events and/or programs that aid in holistic development.
    • Live in an intentional community with peers who share a commitment to fostering a more inclusive world.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation

"Living in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation LLC has been one of the best college experiences I’ve had so far. Through my LLC, I’ve met some of my best friends, as well as future business partners! I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in meeting new people and maximizing their college experience." – Jordan Hill ‘23

This LLC is designed for incoming freshmen who wish to explore their entrepreneurial potential so that they can not only be able to create a better world for themselves, but also the communities they live and work in.

Important: No prior entrepreneurial experience required! All that is needed is motivation to live and work within an interdisciplinary community of Iona students who share a desire to engage in entrepreneurial learning opportunities to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurship is a universal skillset that gives students the ability to take ownership of their learning by identifying and solving the big challenges of our world through innovation.

These two courses, ENT 200 and COL 150, will have students working collaboratively in and between classes in practical activities both in and outside of the classroom.
    • Attend and participate in various events (speaker series, meet-your-mentor, workshops) and activities (co-working at GaelVentures, competitions, entrepreneurship student club) at the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.
    • Live in an intentional community with peers who share a commitment to creating a better world through entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Acceptance Process

Once notified by the Office of Residential Life of acceptance into either LLC, students will receive information about registration for the one-credit course registration.

Participants will be required to uphold residential life expectations in addition to the expectations set forth in the course curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to, community service and/or co-curricular programming, attendance at campus events, and other course requirements. Review each LLC description for detailed information.
