New Student Orientation 2019: Day One

Student Orientation Schedule

Day One:

Tuesday June 18

8:30-9:30 a.m.: Registration & Check-In
Location: Location: Loftus Hall

Welcome to Orientation! Check-in at Loftus hall to get your key and drop off your belongings! You will also receive the schedule for the day and a backpack filled with important information (and fun giveaways). After you’re finished checking in, head over to breakfast.

8:30-10 a.m.: Breakfast for Students
Class of 2023 Student Breakfast
Location: Vitanza Commons, Spellman Hall

9:55 a.m.: Orientation Leaders in Vitanza Commons will guide you to your next session.

10-11:10 a.m.: Meet your OL & Group
Location: Assigned classrooms (check your name tag/schedule at check-in)

Get to know the other students in your group and learn more about your orientation leader.

11:15-11:50 a.m.: Welcome to Gael Nation
Location: Mulcahy Gym, Hynes Athletics Center

An opportunity for campus leaders to formally welcome the Class of 2023! While this is a joint session for students and families, students will be sitting with their Orientation groups.

12-12:45 p.m.:

Maroon: Living the Mission
Location: Romita Auditorium, Ryan Library

Learn about Blessed Edmund Rice and how his vision of social justice is integral to the Iona experience. Find out how to get involved!

Gold: Get Connected
Location: Various Campus Computer Labs, Assigned by Group

Join your group in setting up your online community at Iona. Learn what you need to remain connected. Students will sign up for the Iona emergency text messaging system, enter emergency contact information in Peoplesoft, learn where to have access to financial statements, and more.

12:50-1:35 p.m.:

Location: Various Campus Computer Labs, Assigned by Group

1:40-2:30 p.m.: Lunch
Location: Vitanza Commons, Spellman Hall

2:40-4 p.m.: Peer Theatre: The College Years
Location: Murphy Auditorium

We take care of each other in Gael Nation! Entertaining and honest performances address topics such as consent, alcohol use, sexual assault, and bystander intervention, to help you consider how to make smart choices in challenging situations.

4-4:30 p.m.: Be an Upstander!
Location: Murphy Auditorium

Gaels take care of Gaels. We will debrief the peer theater session and learn about support resources, respectful behavior, and reporting options at Iona.

4:45-5:45 p.m.: Residential Life & Commuter Life

Residential Life (Residential Students)
Location: Mulcahy Gymnasium, Hynes Athletics Center

Learn more about living on-campus. Meet the Residence Life staff and learn about Residence Hall policies and important information you need to know before moving into your new home.

Commuter Life (Commuter Students)
Location: Romita Auditorium, Ryan Library

Meet the staff of the Office of Off-Campus & Commuter Services and learn more about what it is like to commute to Iona and some helpful tips for your first semester.

5:45 p.m.: Schedule Adjustments

Location: LaPenta A, Ground Floor of the Student Union
Do you have questions regarding the schedule you made prior to Orientation? Speak with an academic advisor regarding adjustments. Please note additional advisement consultations as needed, will be available at the end of Day 2 of Orientation by appointment.
Honors Program
Advisors will be in LaPenta Lab B for questions pertaining to Honors schedule adjustments.

5:45-7:15 p.m.: Dinner
Location: Mulcahy Gymnasium, Hynes Athletics Center

Grab dinner with your group and your OL to debrief about what you learned throughout the day. Receive your Orientation t-shirt to wear Day 2 of Orientation. Relax, mingle, and prepare for the night ahead!. There will be music, ice cream, and fun! Then meet your group members and OLs before heading to the next event.

7:45-9 p.m.: Game Show
Location: Murphy Auditorium

Compete against other members of the Class of 2023 in a trivia game show to win awesome prizes!

9-11:15 p.m.: Iona After Dark
Location: Throughout the LaPenta Student Union

Have some fun with your new friends. Get to know the Student Union one of your homes away from home over the next four years. Join the OLS and your classmates for a night of dancing, game tournaments, arts and crafts, food and more. Stop by the photo booth to take a photo with your group.

11:15 p.m.: Gael Chats
Location: Loftus Hall
