My Iona

Training Information

All faculty, staff, and students must complete the CITI Program in the Protection of Human Research Subjects training to carry out their own research or supervise a student's research project.

Upon completion of the training course, a copy of the training certificate will be sent automatically to the Iona University Institutional Contact.

The CITI PROGRAM TRAINING COURSE link below will take you to www.citiprogram.org.

You must first register an account though the following 7-step registration process:

  1. Select Iona University as your “Organization Affiliation” (not Independent Learner option)
  2. Choose the Continue to Create your CITI... option on left (not the SSO option)
  3. Click "I agree..." and "I affirm..." and "Continue..."
  4. Enter your Iona credentials to register an account
  5. STEP 5 – Check “No”
  6. STEP 6 – Select the appropriate Role
    • STEP 6 – Select “Basic Human Subjects – Social and Behavioral Focus” or "Biomedical" (for biomedical research, including collecting biological samples)
    • STEP 6 – Enter your phone number under “Office number”
  7. STEP 7 – Select Group 2 Learner Group

Each module in the training has a quiz with 3-5 questions that you must take and pass before moving on to the next module. You are allowed to retake each quiz. Budget around 2-4 hours to complete the full training. (The refresher courses, after your initial certification expires, take less time to complete.) You do not have to complete the training in one session. You can log back in and finish. When finished, follow the prompt to print out your certificate and be sure to save your certificate as a PDF for your records.

CITI Program Training Course

The CITI training certificate expires at the end of two years; at that time, a notification will be sent to the researcher by CITI. The researcher may renew the certificate by completing a short refresher course. This will extend the certificate for an additional two years. The refresher course may be completed twice, for a total of six years (initial training, plus two refresher courses). At the end of the six-year cycle, the researcher must complete the entire training course.
