Advance technology. Move the world.

Are you creative? Do you embrace challenges? Do you want a great job? Do you hope to make a positive difference in the world? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, welcome to Computer Science at Iona.  Whether your interest is in web design or artificial intelligence, gaming technology or the next iPhone app, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills required to succeed in one of today’s most exciting and wide-open fields.

Our students work closely with full-time faculty who are active researchers and committed teachers. Because class sizes are small, professors get to know every student in the program and can provide the kind of individualized attention, research opportunities and lasting connections you won’t find in larger schools. Our learning environment is challenging and supportive, with dedicated laboratory facilities that give you access to all of the technology you need.

Computer Science Programs

We offer a BA in Computer Science, a BS in Computer Science and an MS in Computer Science. The BS degree program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, ensuring that our program meets the highest international standards of excellence. Students may also choose to pursue the accelerated 5-year BS/MS dual degree program. All of these programs are also offered with a concentration in Cyber Security.

Hands-on learning and service

As you prepare for a career in one of today’s hottest fields, internships and service learning will become an important part of your experience. Thanks to our location within the New York metropolitan area, you’ll have unmatched access to a wide variety of internship opportunities, most paid and many eligible for course credit.  Companies such as IBM, New York Life, Pepsi and many other leading employers offer internships that give our students an invaluable link between the classroom and the workplace––and often a job upon graduation.

You’ll also put your skills to work for the greater good. For example, as part of the introductory database class, students recently built databases and web pages for a number of area not-for-profit organizations. Some of our students also help to teach a class in basic computer skills to senior citizens.

The world is waiting

Today’s computer scientists are helping to shape our future in profound ways, in fields such as:
  • Entertainment – computer gaming and movie production
  • Communication – mobile application development, web application development, data mining
  • Medicine – computer-assisted surgery and medical imaging
  • Art – digital art and virtual realities
  • Transportation – mapping and navigation software and automated vehicles
  • Defense – surveillance and military training, machine learning
  • Environment – meteorology, especially predictive modeling for disaster prediction and intervention

The World is Waiting

Many of our students start ventures or have jobs before they even graduate. Recently, after completing our popular course in iPhone Application Development, two students co-founded a successful company that develops apps for clients in the New York metropolitan area––a year before they received their diplomas.
