Learn a language. Embrace a culture. Move the world.
Before you can impact the world, it helps to see the world through a multicultural lens. If you have a desire to deepen your knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures, we invite you to join our community of engaged learners.
We offer programs at both the graduate and undergraduate level that are stimulating and challenging. Our graduate programs offer students a path toward careers in teaching and academic scholarship. Undergraduate programs include majors in French, Italian or Spanish; other languages are available as minors or additional courses. As you develop language proficiency, you will also delve deeply into culture: art, architecture, literature, theater, film and much more.
Careers: A world of opportunity
Thanks to a rigorous academic program, taught by a dedicated and caring faculty, we have an outstanding track record for job placement. Our recent graduates have taken many different career paths, from teaching and social work to finance, law and international affairs.
Whether your next step is to pursue an advanced degree or enter the workplace, you’ll graduate from Iona equipped with the oral and written language skills necessary to communicate successfully in the modern world.
Study Abroad: Cultivating global citizens
One of the best ways to learn a foreign language is to immerse yourself in the culture. We encourage our language majors to advance their skills through study abroad programs.
There are many different scholarship opportunities available to further your study abroad interests. In recent years, a significantly high number of our students have received distinguished grants, scholarships and internships for study and teaching abroad, including:
John N. Colaneri Scholarships for Language Study Abroad
Ministerio de Cultura de España Teaching Fellowship
Hiriart-Valladares Scholarship for Spanish Study in Spain
Communicate, participate, collaborate
On and off campus, you’ll have exciting opportunities to use your language and cultural literacy skills:
Opportunities to showcase your writing abilities by publishing in Creaciones and Técnica our Spanish literary magazines, and other foreign language publications
Faculty-led field trips into the city to experience foreign language theatre at Repertorio Español or to visit some of NYC’s world-class museums. Trips have included visits to the Metropolitan Opera and the Hispanic Historical Society, El museo del barrio
Participation in our two foreign language honorary societies active on campus: Alpha Mu Gamma, the National University Honorary Society for Excellence in Foreign Language Study, and the Iota Alpha chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Spanish Honor Society.
Internships within the community that match your interests. Recently, students have interned with the Westchester Italian Community Center, New Rochelle afterschool programs and an Italian newspaper
Community service opportunities, including programs to sponsor poor children in Hispanic countries
Through programs and activities like these, at home and abroad, our students deepen their self-awareness and commitment to thoughtfulness, tolerance, decency and compassion, as they discover their own capacity for moving the world.
