Master the medium that moves the world

Our students are analytical storytellers. They engage people and strive to find the truth. They then present information in compelling, provocative ways across multiple media. The Mass Communication Department is a place to hone these skills and enhance your career opportunities in advertising, journalism, media and public relations.

Iona’s location gives you unparalleled access to the leading communication firms in New York City. An extensive network of alumni and corporate connections enables you to match your interests with the needs of the media industry. You’ll learn in small classes, from dedicated faculty who are also accomplished practitioners. In short, it’s the best of both worlds: a rigorous academic community just 20 miles from America’s communications capital.

Mass Communication undergraduates may choose one of four concentrations: Advertising, Journalism, Public Relations and Television/Video, and experience a unique combination of practical and theoretical learning that has been designed to meet the unique needs of each industry.

MA in Public Relations

Our graduate program is the only public relations-centered program between Boston and Washington that meets the demanding standards of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The program provides rigorous training centered on proven business principles and consulting models, in traditional, small-class seminars as well as fully online courses. Students may specialize in corporate communications, nonprofit communications or sports and entertainment public relations, and will gain practical experience with corporations, agencies and media outlets. The PR MA program is also offered in New York City's Rockefeller Center — see more.

Learn from the best, on and off-campus

Our fulltime and adjunct faculty members bring extensive knowledge and practical experience into the classroom and provide exceptional connections beyond classroom walls. They are networked with the thousands of Iona alumni who are active in the field, ready to support fellow Iona students with internships and career opportunities.

New York City and the tri-state area are home to more media companies, advertising and public relations agencies and broadcast companies than any other locale in the world.  For students at Iona, this creates a veritable learning playground, where you’ll not only have valuable, hands-on work experiences, you’ll also have access to some of the most accomplished professionals working in mass communication today.

Internship opportunities range from national media companies to fashion retailers, television news and entertainment shows to consumer magazines, national sports organizations to corporate headquarters. Our students have interned at Comedy Central, Barney’s, Sports Illustrated, Walt Disney and many other organizations in NYC and beyond. Learn more.
