Economics: Move the world towards greater prosperity

Economic activity is a fundamental element of the human experience. By mastering the principles of economics you can build the foundation for an exceptional career–a career that enables you to achieve a high degree of individual success while contributing to a more prosperous world. At Iona, you’ll gain the analytical and problem-solving skills highly valued by today’s employers, along with the hands-on experience to put theory into practice, and the ethical framework to consider the human implications of choices made by individuals, businesses, and governments.

Rigorous academics combined with enriching extra-curricular opportunities

Our rigorous and varied curriculum provides a solid grounding in economic theory, challenging you to think critically about a variety of economic issues. You’ll build the thinking skills that are critical for success and master the quantitative skills in demand by businesses and government organizations. In advanced courses like econometrics and financial economics, you’ll have the opportunity to conduct and present independent research. Iona students also participate in the College Fed Challenge, an intercollegiate competition in which students research and report on current economic trends and present their recommendations to Federal Reserve officials in downtown Manhattan.

The right preparation for your career or graduate education

The BA and BS degrees in Economics are broad and their applications are diverse, providing exceptional preparation for both graduate school and professional careers. Economics majors are consistently high scorers in the GMAT (used by MBA programs) and the LSAT (used by law schools).  In the workplace, they are high earners and high achievers.

Your success will be supported by Iona’s active alumni network: accomplished professionals who welcome our students into their firms for instruction, internships, and employment opportunities. With midtown Manhattan just 20 miles away, you’ll have internships available to you in a wide variety of fields, from sports marketing to investment banking, at firms such as Morgan Stanley, Lincoln Financial, AEG, and IBM.

Alumni mentoring opportunities

Iona has an active Economics Club that travels to NYC frequently to meet with alumni and learn how economics is applied in business, banking, and government.

From valuable internships, to the College Fed Challenge, to the activities of the Economics Club, you’ll see first-hand how Economics moves the world as you build the skills to make your own contribution as a leader in business and society.

Student Success

The Economics program challenged me daily. I enjoyed working through complex real-world problems.

FACT:

Economics majors are 250% more likely to become a CEO of an S&P 500 company than students who major in business, outperforming all other majors as a path to the corner office.
