Open and relevant to students in any major across all three of Iona University’s schools, this interdisciplinary minor explores how the fields of public history and digital humanities inform and affect our modern lives. Students in this program are empowered to take their knowledge of the past and apply it to the opportunities and challenges of today, gaining scholarly and pre-professional experience along the way.
Why Study Public History and Digital Humanities at Iona?
Iona offers a unique learning experience through our Institute for Thomas Paine Studies (ITPS). Founded in 2011, the ITPS has become one of the nation’s premier organizations for the study of Thomas Paine’s writing, life, legacy and the early history of the United States and the Age of Revolutions. Deeply committed to the importance of undergraduate research and scholastic involvement, you will have the opportunity to work with dedicated scholars from the ITPS as well as expert faculty from various disciplines.

What You'll Learn
Blending liberal arts and humanities learning with professional studies, you will explore the interrelated fields of public history and digital humanities and draw on the unique resources and programming of the ITPS.
You will study various public history methods, such as museum management, as well as curatorial and social media engagement.
Additionally, you will gain experience using contemporary digital tools, such as data visualization, mapping, digitization, virtual reality and textual analysis and build valuable skills that can be applied across diverse professional settings.

Program Highlights
ITPS Programs and Opportunities
Students can participate in the dozens of programs and offerings underway at the ITPS, from conferences, symposiums, and popular talks, to research publications and projects, public-facing events, podcasts, blogging, social media campaigns, and much more.
Digital Internship
This program includes the chance to hone skills in a wide range of projects and learning formats through an internship that includes onsite collaborations in New Rochelle and Washington, D.C. Social media strategy, podcast production, exhibit curation and database best practices are just some examples of the skills this internship fosters.
Networking Opportunities and Work Experience
Gain key work experience and networking opportunities, from a semester-long participation in the McNeil Center for Early American Studies Undergraduate Research Workshop (URW) at the University of Pennsylvania to other initiatives such as the Text Analysis Project (TAP) at the ITPS.
