How to Use Your Free Credits as an Honors Student in Good Standing

Students in the honors program who are in good standing are eligible for six free credit hours of coursework during a Summer or Winter session.

Deadlines for Free Credit Requests

  • Winter Session Courses: December 1
  • Summer Session Courses: May 1
  • Fall or Spring Credits Above Regular Tuition Coverage: One week prior to the first day of classes for that semester

Late requests will not be accepted except in rare and exceptional circumstances.

How It Works

  1. Iona’s Student Financial Services will cover the cost of tuition for up to six credit hours of coursework during the Summer or Winter Sessions, or—in rare cases—for course credits taken during the Fall or Spring semesters that exceed what is normally covered by regular tuition.
  2. While tuition is covered, students are still responsible for any additional course-related fees, such as lab fees or book charges. These are usually much smaller than tuition and must be paid out of pocket.
  3. After a student enrolls in a course and pays any applicable fees, Student Financial Services will apply the tuition coverage. (It is normal to see a tuition charge on your initial bill before the credit is applied.)
  4. Incoming students may begin using their free credit allocation after completing one full semester of coursework.

How to Access Your Free Credits

  1. You must be in good standing in the Honors Program.
Students in Academic Recovery II: Probation are not eligible to use their free credits during the academic year in which they are on probation.
  2. Enroll in your desired Summer or Winter session course(s).
  3. Email Charlotte Wray, Honors Assistant, at cwray@iona.edu, to request that your credits be applied. Be sure to include the course name, course number, section, and the term (e.g., Summer I, II, III).
  4. Dr. Wray will then apply a special code to your enrollment, which signals Student Financial Services to apply the tuition credit once your other fees have been paid.
