Richard McDevitt ’58 was born in November of 1936 in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and attended Cathedral Prep and Power Memorial High Schools in New York City. During his time at Iona, Dick worked at a Howard Johnsons to support his education. After earning his BA in accounting, he went on to become a Certified Public Accountant and worked for international public accounting firms throughout his career.
During his career, Dick served in leadership roles for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of CPAs.
In 1976, he met Roselie and together they raised their family, moving from New York to Colorada and ultimately to Florida.
Dick loved to travel, skiing, and boating was a particular passion. He owned a 43 ft. cruiser that was his pride and joy and standing at the helm were some of his happiest moments. He served as a board member and flag officer in Huguenot Yacht Club in New York and later in New Bern Yacht Club in North Carolina (where he also served as Commodore).
Dick was also involved in several organizations, including the First Friday Club, and the Wild Geese, which raised funds for promoting Irish culture and education on Irish history and traditions. His other interests included Broadway musicals and spy novels and he made a mean Martini.
