The Sophie Biddy Scholarship

The Sophie Biddy Award is named in memory of Sophie Biddy, who, until the age of 92, was a familiar figure at Iona, where she attended classes for over 30 years, always trying to quench her thirst for knowledge.

Sophie attended Teachers Training School at age 16, received her BS in education from New York University, and, earned a master’s degree in science Science at Cornell University. Sophie taught general science and biology in the New York City School System for 44 years. She was a world traveler whose interests encompassed music, opera, ballet, theater, art, and the stock market. As well as being an avid painter and sculptor, she studied and taught piano throughout her life.
