Accessibility Services Office: Accommodation Process

Role of the Student

  • Accessing accommodations at the post- secondary level is determined by the student.
  • Student contacts the ASO and register for accommodations through Clockwork in a timely manner.
  • Student and staff engage in the interactive process to discuss disability, its impact and possible accommodations that will remove barriers for the student.
  • Understand that accommodations are determined on a case by case basis and almost always requires documentation provided by a qualified medical professional as well as an in-person meeting between the student and a Disability Services Professional.
  • Request accommodation letters through Clockwork each semester so that faculty can be notified of their need for accommodations. They are also required to meet the requirements of the course as outlined, with reasonable accommodations.
  • Understand that reasonable accommodations are not retroactive, and do not excuse absences, missed assignments, or exams, unless otherwise stated in accommodation letter.

Role of The Accessibility Services Office

  • Carefully consider the nature of the student’s disability and how the disability may impact the student’s ability to learn and to demonstrate achievement in a course.
  • Approve reasonable accommodations, auxiliary aids and services for students in a timely manner.
  • Work with faculty and students when implementing accommodations that are more complex in nature.
  • Serve as a resource for Faculty in order to create access to their course in a timely manner.

Role of the Faculty Member

  • Comply with the requested the accommodations noted in the Accommodation Letter.
  • Direct students who disclose their need for accommodations to the ASO.
  • Work with the Accessibility Services Office on ways to create access to your courses.
  • Seek guidance and clarification regarding implementation of accommodations from the ASO.
