Private Scholarships

Many outside private organizations offer scholarships of varying amounts to qualified students. These organizations are not affiliated with Iona University but can be a great source of funding for your education.

Prestigious Private Scholarships & Grants

  • Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program: For current sophomores or juniors pursuing a baccalaureate degree and who plan to eventually earn a Ph.D. Students planning on attending medical school would only be eligible if they plan to become researchers rather than practitioners.
  • Boren Scholarships: Scholarships that support study in areas of the world that are critical to American interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Summer, semester, and year-long grants available. Recipients agree to the service requirements.
  • Carnegie Junior Fellows Program: For students who are interested in “work as research assistants to the endowment's senior associates…. to advance the cause of peace through analysis and development of fresh policy ideas and direct engagement and collaboration with decision-makers in government, business, and civil society.” Each year the endowment offers 8 to 10 one-year fellowships to graduating seniors and individuals who graduated during the past academic year.
  • The Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation: Undergraduate scholarships of up to $3,500 per academic year that are awarded to juniors and seniors majoring in television and film at accredited 4-year, degree-granting U.S. colleges and universities.
  • Ford Foundation Fellowship Program: For those “in one or more of the following groups whose underrepresentation in the American professoriate has been severe and longstanding” (see full list on the Foundation’s website), who “are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.”
  • Fulbright Grants: The purpose of these grants is to foster the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills between the United States and other countries. The grants support graduate study or research as well as professional training in the creative or performing arts abroad for seniors and graduates.
  • Gates Cambridge Scholarship: This fund endows “prestigious, highly competitive full-cost scholarships…. awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.” One to four years of post-graduate study is supported for a second bachelor’s degree or graduate study.
  • Harry S. Truman Scholarship: For juniors who “hope to be a ‘change agent’, in time, improving the ways that government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions serve the public.” The scholarship covers the student’s senior year of college as well as three years of graduate school, and offers leadership and internship opportunities within the federal government.
  • Harvey Fellowships: Fellowships support full-time graduate study. Applicants must demonstrate deep Christian faith.
  • James Madison Memorial Fellowship: For those who “plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level (grades 7–12).” Fellowships enable students to teach the U.S. Constitution at the secondary school level before receiving funds for graduate school.
  • John and Fannie Hertz Foundation Fellowship: For “students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.” Fellowships support doctoral study in the areas of the physical sciences.
  • Marshall Scholarship: Scholarships allow students to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have a bachelor’s degree from an American four-year college or university.
  • Morris K. Udall Scholarship Program: Two different scholarships are given: to those who intend to pursue careers in environmental public policy, and to those who are Native American or Native Alaskan and who pursue careers in health care or tribal public policy. Applicants must be undergraduate sophomores or juniors.
  • Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans: For college seniors who are holders of a green card, naturalized citizens, or a child of naturalized citizens. Applicants must either have a bachelor’s degree or be in a final year of study.
  • Rhodes Scholarship: Fellowships provide for two years of graduate study at Oxford University. Applicants must be between 18 and 24 who will have graduated with a bachelor’s degree before accepting the scholarship.
