University Council Minutes, November 9, 2022

D. DeFino called the meeting to order at 3:34. Quorum was met.

Approval of Minutes

Minutes from the 10/19/22 University Council meeting were approved via email on 10/28/22

Announcements

  • Week of the Peacemaker runs through next week
  • “Whose Land is Our Land” event will be held in LaPenta 105 on 11/9 to commemorate the 84th anniversary of Kristallnacht

Action Item: Proposal to approve MS in Nursing Health Care Organizational Leadership

  • The motion carried unanimously. Item closed.

Discussion Item: University Governance

  • D. DeFino discussed the proposed new model for University Council meetings, and the need to review governance with an eye toward greater efficiency, transparency, and inclusiveness; he also noted ongoing efforts to fully integrate the School of Health Sciences into governance committees
  • The Senate will consider the potential benefits and logistics of filling all university committee seats by election, rather than the current model, where most are filled by appointment
  • P. Tascio will check on viewership of governance minutes on website
  • SGA proposed a booklet that would list the committees and their purposes

Discussion Item: School of Health Sciences

  • K. Dhanwada reported that accelerated nursing program and B.A. in nursing underway;  Marriage and Family Therapy accredited; renovation ongoing in Bronxville in classrooms
  • The $5m Kelly gift to SHS was acknowledged
  • The focus on interprofessional experience (in particular, students learn from one another) was highlighted

Discussion Item: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

  • A.Munsch reported that recommendations have been made to HR regarding diversity in hiring, recruiting, retention, and curriculum; DEIB serves as a partner and resource in campus wide education programming; a calendar was created to offer monthly communications from DEIB to celebrate diversity; DEIB has hosted several speakers and events
  • T. Moretti reported that the Honors Task Force will work with A. Munsch to infuse DEIB into its revised curriculum
  • A suggestion was made to include the Humanities speakers in DEIB events

Discussion Item: Accessibility & Accommodations

  • D. Palmer reported that ASO is serving 588 students with accommodations; and reviewed ASO procedures and resources
  • K. Cardenas reported that Clockwork will be replaced by Accommodate, a service that will include all students with accommodations and their accommodation letters
  • A question was raised about the strain on ASO and faculty resources with the growing number of accommodations

There being no other business, D. DeFino adjourned the University Council meeting at 5:37 p.m. The next meeting of the Council will be held on 11/30/22.
