University Council Minutes, April 12, 2023

General Assembly April 12, 2023, 3:30 p.m, via Zoom

D. DeFino called the meeting to order at 3:35. Quorum was met.

Announcements 

  • Holocaust Commemoration on April 25 in Romita Auditorium
  • Scholars Day April 20
  • Intramural Basketball Final in Hynes E. on April 13

Action Item: Revised Incomplete Policy

CAA presented proposed changes to the Incomplete policy; the Council voted unanimously to endorse

Discussion Item: Proposed Changes to Faculty Representation in UC Committees

D. DeFino presented changes to faculty membership ratios by school; the Council will take up these changes as an action item at its next meeting

Discussion Item Follett Access

T. Mulligan, representatives from Business Services, and a Follett representative answered questions regarding the Follett Access program, wherein students may pay a fixed fee per semester in order to access digital course texts; the program will launch in Fall 2023

Discussion Item: Continuity and Communication in Governance

Member of the Council and Iona community shared several ideas, including:

  • Regular meetings between chairs of elected committees to identify priorities and coordinate agenda items
  • Post and share annual meeting schedules early in the academic year
  • Annual retreat days early in the fall term (where classes are suspended) for the entire community to come together and discuss concerns and priorities for the coming year
  • Outgoing committee chairs meeting with incoming chairs to review the work of the previous year and hand off resources
  • Following the model adopted by SGA this year, hold elections early in the spring term to allow for a longer “on-ramp” for new leadership

There being no other business, D. DeFino adjourned the University Council meeting at 4:52 p.m. The next meeting of the Council will be held by Zoom on 5/3/23.
