Summer Immersions

I'M India (Service-Learning, Education)

Dates: May 16-26, 2021
We will partner, once again, with the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in Kolkata, India, serving in various Brothers’ ministries with children and people with disabilities, while also collaborating with the Nine is Mine Campaign in running human rights workshops and advocacy activities for the Christian Brother schools. Participants will also volunteer at Mother Teresa house serving the extremely poor, sick and dying.

I'M Ireland

Dates: May 17-27, 2021
Students will walk in the footsteps of Blessed Edmund Rice during this mission immersion in Ireland. One week will be spent in Dublin serving the Wheatfield Prison, the Peter McVerry drop-in center for people who are homeless or suffering addiction, and soup kitchens while learning about social justice issues relating to these populations. Participants will also head to Waterford and Callan to visit the Blessed Edmund Rice heritage sites and to Belfast to serve with the Edmund Rice Network ministries at the Westcourt Centre.

I'M L’Arche Boston

L’Arche is world-wide network of communities of people with and without developmental disabilities. The Iona in Mission groups will be sharing time and living together with the L’Arche Syracuse and L’Arche Boston North members to witness their community and the dignity of every person regardless of ability. This immersion will be a journey of spirituality, community, and awareness of developmental disability.

I'M L’Arche Syracuse

I'M Camp Friendship, Mississippi

Dates: June 6-12, 2021

The Iona in Mission Mississippi team will serve as counselors at Camp Friendship, which is a week-long overnight camp experience for children living in poverty and of which a third to a half live in foster care. The fun-filled, safe, and loving camp week is a real highlight of the children’s years. Our Gaels will help make this a reality through their presence and compassion to those little ones.

I'M Mustard Seed, Kingston, Jamaica

Dates: May 16-22, 2021

Students will travel to Kingston, Jamaica to work with Mustard Seed Communities (MSC), which is an international nonprofit dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable populations throughout the developing world. MSC manages sustainable agriculture initiatives and provides education, nutrition, and skills training programs in order to improve the economic, social, and spiritual conditions within marginalized communities.

I'M Zambia

Dates: May 16-30, 2021

Participants in the Zambia immersion act as servant-learners, immersing themselves in the Zambian culture and customs in Mazabuka, “the sweetest town in all of Zambia.” The group serves at the Christian Brothers’ Changa Changa community school, the City of Joy home for at-risk girls, and accompanies home caregiver teams on visits to the elderly sick and people living with HIV/AIDS. The team also visits the Magoye Village to experience rural Zambian life and travels to Livingstone, Zambia, to visit the natural wonder of Victoria Falls.
