ProctorU for Students

  • Overview & Policy

    Overview

ProctorU is an online proctoring service for test taking online. ProctorU is integrated with Iona Blackboard, but can also be used with other online platforms, such as publisher’s websites, at the instructor's discretion.

Online proctors use a three-step process to replicate the face-to-face proctoring experience over the internet that includes:

    • Connecting with the test taker via web cam.
    • Monitoring the test taker's computer screen and surface area in real time.
    • Authenticating the test taker's identity using a multi-factor process.

Through this process, proctors can see the test taker, identify the test taker, and monitor the test taker.

    Iona's Policy Regarding Online Examinations

Iona's Policy Regarding Online Examinations can be found on the Office of the Provost website.

    Pre-Exam Checklist

    1. Visit www.proctoru.com/testitout to check your equipment before logging in.
    2. Be sure you are in a well-lit, quiet and private room. The lighting of your room must be daylight quality, and overhead lighting is preferred. If overhead lighting is not possible, please make sure that your light source is not directly behind you because it will make it difficult for your proctor to see you.
    3. Have your photo ID ready. International students will need two forms of photo ID.
    4. Bring a reflective surface such as a mobile phone with front-facing camera or mirror. This is so you can show the edges of your monitor to your proctor.
    5. Make sure to close out all programs, applications, and websites that do not pertain to the exam.
    6. Remove any non-religious head coverings.

    Connect to a Proctor

At the appointment time, a Start link will appear in the ProctorU tool in Blackboard. Clicking on this link takes you to the proctor room. Brief prompts will guide you through the process.
    1. Confirm your name and the exam you are taking.
    2. Confirm the exam rules and special instructions.
    3. Take a picture of your photo ID to show the proctor.
    4. Take a head shot photo for your ProctorU profile.
    5. You will download a small program to connect you to the proctor.
    6. Upon connection to the proctor, the proctor checks the photo ID picture for accuracy.
    7. You will be asked a series of security questions to confirm your identity. These questions are pulled from publicy-available records. ProctorU does not store this information.
    8. The proctor will secure your workspace as you pan the camera or use a reflective surface around the edges of your monitor.
    9. Remote access to your computer allows the proctor to check for any unallowed programs.
Upon completion of these steps you may begin the exam. You will be virtually monitored throughout the exam to ensure there are no security breaches. Any suspicious activity during the exam such as using unapproved sources or taking unauthorized breaks is documented using photos and video.
