Spring Break 2027
Known for its rich history and stunning natural beauty, this opportunity will provide a once in a lifetime chance to live and learn in the country of Dominica. Through this experience you will get intimate exposure to the local culture, nature, and school system. During this trip, you will work alongside premier educators at St. Mary's Academy and Alpha Centre to serve students living in Roseau, the capital of Dominica, and around the country. You will also have the opportunity to visit historic Portsmouth, patriciate in cultural immersion with the Indigenous peoples of Dominica, the Kalinago, and learn about how Dominica is leading the world in environmental sustainability through excursions to national parks, a newly commissioned geothermal plant, and more.
You must enroll in EDU 202 or EDU 721 (3-credits)

Course Overview
CDS 1198 Special Topics: Comparative International Education
EDU 202/721 is a 3-credit service learning and study abroad course. A special section of EDU 202 and EDU 721, this course will meet the requirements of the traditional courses but extend the focus on United States school systems to Dominica too. Students will do this through examining the historic foundations of school systems in the United States and Dominica, the influence of politics and philosophies of learning on schools, and how we can use curriculum and pedagogy to support consequential learning for communities domestically and abroad. In the course, student will have an opportunity to learn from educators, students, and communities in Dominica and United States through hands-on learning, school visits, and community engagement.
