Dominica

Spring Break 2026

Known for its rich history and stunning natural beauty, this opportunity will provide a once in a lifetime chance to live and learn in the country of Dominica. Through this experience you will get intimate exposure to the local culture, nature, and school system. During this trip, you will work alongside premier educators at St. Mary’s Academy to serve students living in Roseau, the capital of Dominica. In addition, you will have opportunities to go whale watching, visit historic Portsmouth, learn to cook traditional Dominican food from a local chef, and participate in a night stay and cultural immersion in the Kalinago Territory, the home of the Indigenous people of Dominica.

You must enroll in CDS 1198 Special Topics: Comparative International Education (3-credits)

Estimated cost: $2,800-$3,000
This cost includes:

  • Airfare and flight transfer in Dominica
  • Accommodations at Fort Young Hotel and Diving Resort and in Kalinago Territory
    • Cost includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Admission fees for:
    • Kalinago Territory cultural immersion
    • Cooking class with local chef
    • Dominica Museum

Course Overview

CDS 1198 Special Topics: Comparative International Education

This course is a 3-credit interdisciplinary, service learning, and study abroad course that will provide an overview and comparison of educational systems in the United States and Dominica. Students will do this through an examination of the schools, culture, and society of the United States and Dominica. This course will cover the historic foundations of school systems in the United States and Dominica, the influence of politics on the school systems today, and ways we can use curriculum and pedagogy to support consequential learning for communities domestically and abroad. In the course, student will have an opportunity to learn from Dominican educators, students, and communities through hands-on learning, school visits, and community engagement while living and learning in Dominica.
