How to Get Involved

Interest

We say that the immersion trip chooses you, so take time to look over the various immersion trips. Don’t be attracted only to an exotic name, but listen to where you might be called to serve, what kind of service fits with you, which break works better for you, ask former Iona in Mission participants, contact the student trip leaders, or email Stephen Hill in the Office of Mission and Ministry on the second floor in LaPenta Student Union or call at (914) 633-2340.
 
To help you learn more about the Iona in Mission offerings, come to:
  • Info Session during Gaels Go Global event: August 30 at 6 p.m. in the EndZone
  • Involvement Fair: August 31 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Mazzella Field
  • Info Session #2: September 5 at noon in LaPenta, McGrath Room
  • You are always welcome in the Office of Mission and Ministry all year to learn more!

Apply to be on an Iona in Mission Team

To apply, please complete the Iona in Mission participant application by 5 p.m. on the application deadline date of the trip you are applying to.

Interview

After completing the application, you will sign-up for an informal interview with the Student Leader and Iona in Mission Committee Assistant. This is a chance to get to know you better and share more information about the immersion with you.

Team Selection

If selected for the team, you will begin preparing by meeting weekly to build community, learn about your immersion and host community, plan team and individual fundraising, and begin the reflection process. The weekly team meetings are essential and mandatory.
 
Although we strive to include all applicants, unfortunately each team has limited number of spots. If you are not selected for a team please do not be discouraged!  As we say: the trip chooses you – so please apply to other Iona in Mission trips.

Apply to be a Student Trip Leader

Student leaders are participants from past trips who have demonstrated an ability to be conscientious and compassionate. They are responsible for working with the Iona in Mission Coordinator to organize and plan the trip; to select and form the mission trip team, facilitate weekly preparation meetings, and ensure the Iona in Mission experience before, during, and after the immersion. Training sessions in May and August are held to prepare student leaders.

In addition to the extraordinary experience being a student leader gives students, there is also financial compensation. Leaders will receive a discount of 25-50 percent from the cost of the trip.

Apply to be on the Iona in Mission Committee

Join other past Iona in Mission participants who are committed to helping run and sustain the IIM community with the Coordinator. The Iona in Mission Committee is dedicated to:
  • Promoting the mission trips
  • Assisting the student trip leaders
  • Evaluating and researching new sites
  • Fostering community
  • Providing framework for program-wide fundraising
  • Organizing and coordinating social justice initiatives
Through these actions, the Committee provides the foundation for the Iona in Mission program and reinforces the mission of Iona College through service and social justice education.
