Section: Safety, Health & Environmental Services
Responsible Office(s): Human Resources and Campus Safety
Effective Date: 9/1/1996
Revised: 10/01/2002, 10/27/2017

This policy applies to all employees, faculty, students and visitors to the College.

Iona University is dedicated to maintaining a healthy work and learning environment. This policy is intended to eliminate the potential for exposure to secondhand smoke and to be consistent with New York State Public Health Law. Iona University prohibits smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, except in designated areas. This includes all College buildings inclusive of residence halls and their grounds, clinics, laboratories, classrooms, private offices, balconies, plazas, vestibules, loading docks; vehicles or any other campus property.

By law, smoking is prohibited within 20 feet of any building’s doorway or open window. Therefore, smoking that obstructs any building entrance, covered walkway or ventilation is prohibited.

Designated smoking areas are located in Columba Lot, Montgomery Lot, Murphy Lot and the area behind the parking garage. Smoking is allowed in these areas but littering must be avoided through the use of receptacles provided.
