Steven Mattus '94MBA

Steven Mattus ’94MBA is the Chief Investment Officer of Tandems (formerly SigFig), where he oversees investment strategy, portfolio management, and risk oversight. With more than 25 years of experience at top global institutions—including UBS, Credit Suisse, and Deutsche Bank—he has deep expertise in risk management, portfolio construction, alternative investments, and wealth advisory.  

Why did you choose Iona to pursue your MBA?  

I chose Iona because of its strong reputation and proximity to New York City, offering excellent career and networking opportunities. I had a graduate assistantship, which allowed me to gain valuable experience while contributing to the campus community.  

How did your MBA help you in your career?  

My MBA helped launch my career by connecting me to my first internship through the school, which led directly to my first job and set the foundation for a long, successful career.

What is your advice for current students?  

My advice for current students is to demonstrate genuine passion and interest when pursuing a career or specific role. Hiring managers can quickly tell when your enthusiasm is authentic, or not, and it makes a real difference.  For example, when interviewing for a position in banking, it is critical to be fully conversant in market trends and economic conditions, the same way a rabid sports fan would talk in great depth about a favorite team.  It is not hard to do for those who are passionate about the subject!

What is your proudest professional achievement?

My proudest professional achievement is leading UBS Investment Management through the challenging COVID period, delivering record results while maintaining high employee satisfaction and retention.

What is your fondest memory/favorite faculty member at Iona?  

I was working at DLJ, and Dr. McGrath recommended student Jim Oates to me when I was looking for an intern. Jim Oates (Iona Class of 1995) and I went on to hire 8 to 10 Iona interns at DLJ.

What is your favorite movie, book, TV show or podcast?

SmartLess with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, & Will Arnett is a podcast that connects and unites people from all walks of life to learn about shared experiences. It’s genuinely funny, informative, and relevant.

What do you feel are your secrets to success?

I never took a single day for granted.

Did you have a mentor/role model? If so, what impact did they have on your career?

Yes, I’ve had several, each contributing to my growth in unique ways. Some served as coaches, providing guidance and feedback, while others were leaders I admired and sought to emulate.
