Why did you choose Iona to pursue your MBA?

I joined General Foods R&D in Tarrytown, NY. At a meeting with the HR Manager, I was asked if I wanted to pursue a career as a scientist or a manager. I stated that I wanted to pursue a career as a manager. He recommended an MBA degree at Iona.

How did it help you in your career?

Case study assignments required me to recommend a viable solution to real management issues. The classes helped to develop a process of successful problem solving, a critical element in all managerial situations. This was critical to my success as a technical manager.

What is your advice for current students?

Tolerate the required classes (math, statistics, economics, etc.). Always ask your professor for guidance or help, as they are great resources.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

There were two: Becoming R&D Division Manager for the Kraft Pizza Division. The second was receiving the Kraft Global Technology & Quality Technical Leadership Award.

What is your fondest memory/favorite faculty member at Iona?

I had to take Marketing. With a BS in Chemistry and a job in R&D, this did not seem relevant to my career aspirations. At the close of class, the professor asked what we had learned. No one got it right. He was in a suit, tie, white shirt, and shined shoes. His departing statement was, "Dress for Success."

What is your favorite movie, book, TV show, or podcast?

My favorite movie is "My Cousin Vinny." My favorite TV show was the early years of NCIS.

What do you feel are your secrets to success?

Treat everyone well, regardless of their status or position, participate in voluntary activities internally and externally (you will meet people who may help you in the future) and be open to positions that you may not have ever considered. I was offered the position of Senior Director of Global & Scientific Affairs. I took the job – it was the best one ever!

Did you have a mentor/role model? If so, what impact did they have on your career?

Dr. Charles Cante – who is the one who said, "Go get your MBA and go to Iona."

Do you have any other information to share?

Prior to joining R&D, I was an Officer in the US Navy.
