Science and Soccer Standout Caroline Scott ’25 Reflects on Her Iona Research Experience

Student Success

Caroline Scott ’25, of Quantico, Maryland, is a highly motivated chemistry and mathematics major with a passion for both science and soccer.

In addition to her success on the field, Scott is also a researcher alongside Sunghee Lee, Ph.D., Board of Trustees endowed professor in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department.

“Iona has allowed me to work with Dr. Lee, in her lab, to get real research experience before grad school. That is not an opportunity most undergraduates have, but at Iona, I am able to have that advantage over other graduate school applicants,” Scott said. “I have been able to learn and develop leadership, responsibility, teamwork and dedication in a research setting.”

Scott, a goalkeeper, was recruited to join Iona due to her performance in women’s soccer and has taken full use of the campus’ many opportunities.

In the future, she plans to apply to graduate school to get her Ph.D. in physical chemistry.

“Iona has given me the opportunity to get laboratory research experience, which will be great for applying to graduate school,” she said.

I chose to attend Iona because I was recruited to play for the women's soccer team and when I visited campus, I loved it.

What interests you most about your chosen course of study?
When I first took chemistry in high school, I loved how it challenged me and I found myself never bored learning about chemistry. I love that the possibilities of what I can choose to do as a career are endless with a chemistry degree.

What distinct advantages have you gained from your Iona experience?
Iona has allowed me to work with Dr. Lee, in her lab and to get real research experience before grad school.
