Michael J. Hughes teaches the history department’s course offerings on the history of Europe from 1648 to the present. He specializes in military history and the history of Napoleonic and Revolutionary France, and he is particularly interested in military motivation and the relationship between war, culture, and gender. His recent book, Forging Napoleon’s Grande Armée: Motivation, Military Culture, and Masculinity in the French Army, 1800-1808, which was published by New York University Press, best illustrates his approach to these subjects. Dr. Hughes is also a faculty member in the Honors program, where he teaches HON 202, Honors Humanities Seminar IV. As a professor and as the current undergraduate chair of the history department, he truly enjoys working with Iona students.
