The events that move the world are shaped by politics.

Are you intrigued by the influence of politics in our lives? Can you picture yourself working at the UN, for the FBI, the White House, in Congress or the Foreign Service? Do you love to debate, argue, advocate and analyze? If so, welcome to Political Science at Iona. We offer a rigorous, dynamic program that will give you a chance to explore complex issues of government, law, policy and international relations. You will gain an understanding of how political movements shape our times, while you develop the tools to become an agent of positive change in the world.

Follow your passion for politics

The study of Political Science at Iona opens up a world of possibilities. You may choose to focus in traditional areas such as Public Policy or Pre-law, or take advantage of our interdisciplinary major in International Studies. A minor in Political Science complements many other disciplines, from Business to Environmental Studies. Our challenging academic program is excellent preparation for graduate school and has led our graduates to successful careers in many areas, including law, business, education, media, government and public policy.

Supportive faculty, outstanding opportunities

As a Political Science major, you’ll learn in small classes taught by engaged, enthusiastic faculty members who will become your mentors and advisors, supporting your goals with internship and research opportunities as well as career guidance. Active scholars and researchers, our faculty regularly publish and present at conferences; you’ll also find them featured in the media as political experts.

Iona’s proximity to New York City is a real plus for our students. With campus just 20 miles north of midtown Manhattan, you’ll have access to exciting, hands-on internships in national and international government agencies as well as state, county and local organizations.

Engage with the wider world

Two unique programs give Iona Political Science students a chance to make global connections:
  • The Soliya Connect Program:  This partnership with the Egyptian-based organization Soliya enables our students to engage with peers from the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, Europe and the US, in guided discussions on global socio-political issues. Students develop 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, cross-cultural communication and media literacy skills.
  • International In-Service Learning in Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Conducted during Spring Break, this life-changing experience integrates many facets of political science. Students volunteer their time in several of the city’s charitable organizations, serving the people of Haiti while learning about their social, cultural, historical, economic, political and religious lives.
Our students attend briefings by UN ambassadors and NGO experts twice a year in NYC as part of the International Leadership Series. Topics range from human trafficking, to water as a basic human right, to nuclear proliferation, to indigenous rights. Students also take advantage of opportunities like these:
  • Compete as a member of our nationally ranked Mock Trial Team
  • Participate on a Model United Nations Team
  • Work with faculty and fellow students on undergraduate research

Internship opportunities for Political Science majors include

  • Edmund Rice International Internship
  • U.S. Senate
  • Attorney General of New York
  • Governor of New York
  • U.S. Congress
  • Yonkers City Council
  • New York State Assembly
